Eelgrass Restoration

The educational component of SAVE Environmental's work in restoring estuary habitat is critical for the ongoing success of our efforts. Community support is needed to reduce impacts on the marine environment, and assist health of the eelgrass meadows and associated marine life. Education and support starts in our schools.
In 2024 Rob held 13 workshops with over 300 participants in the Town of East Hampton, East Hampton Shellfish Nursery and East Hampton Maritime Museum. Participants included well over hundred second and third graders, high school students, and community members.
East Hampton, Brentwood, Sayville, Hampton Bays and Bridgeport schools have had educational sessions with Rob Vasiluth.
Other student outreach includes mentoring a Brentwood High School STEM finalist on a project to assess the impact of nitrogen pollution on eelgrass, as well as mentoring a Sayville HS Junior to design methodologies to grow eelgrass seeds.
Presentations about eelgrass ecosystems and their importance are regularly made to rotaries, civic associations, and most recently, the Long Island Sound (LIS) Eelgrass Collaborative.

Students from Amagansett and East Hampton Elementary gathered this year at East Hampton Town Marine Museum for hands-on eelgrass restoration workshops.
